Parable of the Sower

4:1 Again Jesus began to teach beside the sea, and gathered around him a great multitude, while entering a boat and sat there in the sea and all the people on shore by the sea.

4:2 And he taught them many things in parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,

4:3 Hear ye: Behold, a sower went out to sow seed

4:4 and pass that some fell by the wayside, and the birds came from heaven and devoured them.

4:5 And some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth.

4:6 But when the sun rose they were scorched, and because they had no root they dried.

4:7 And some fell among thorns and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.

4:8 Still other seed fell on good soil and brought forth fruit, then sprouted and grew, and produced thirty, sixty and a hundredfold.

4:9 Then I said: He who has ears, let him hear.

4:10 when he was alone, those who were near him with the twelve asked him about the parable.

4:11 And they said: To you is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all things in parables;

4:12 That seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand that do not turn and be forgiven them.

4:13 And said unto them, Know ye not this parable? How will you understand all the parables?

4:14 The sower sows the word.

4:15 And these are they by the wayside in the word is sown, but when they hear, then comes Satan, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

4:16 These are they likewise which are sown on stony ground who, when they heard the word, immediately receive it with joy;

4:17 And have no root in themselves but are short lived, for when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they stumble.

4:18 These are they which are sown among thorns, hear the word,

4:19 And the cares of this century, and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

4:20 And these are the ones sown on good soil, hear the word, and receive , and bear fruit thirty, sixty, and hundredfold.
